It’s a sport that can be taken up by people of any age, weight, height, and ability. There isn’t even a requirement to be remarkably strong and flexible, as this naturally develops through climbing.
We will be planning a number of climbing events, both indoors and outdoors, throughout the warmer months of the year. Details of these events, and how to register to attend, can be found in the events page of the website.
Most people initially take up climbing indoors, which has the benefits of being able to learn to climb in a safe and controlled environment without the effects of weather.
Many towns and cities now have at least one climbing centre and a full list of approved centres can be found using the link below. The disciplines of indoor climbing can include:
The BMC have produced an excellent article on How to start indoor climbing and we’re happy to answer any queries that you may have, and to help point you in the right direction, to get you up and running.

It should be noted that the better you get at outdoor climbing, the harder the route you can climb, and with that comes increased risk. It’s therefore important that you develop the necessary experience and skills to keep you safe.
There are many qualified instructors within the UK that can safeguard outdoor climbing sessions, as well as inform and instruct on the necessary skills to climb safely. These instructors can be found on the Mountain Training Association: Find a leader database.
The following links will take you the the UKC website, a list of BMC approved climbing centres, and also mental health climbing groups. Please feel free to contact us via e-mail if you have any questions on climbing. We’re more than happy to help you get started.
